How close is Merzouga to the Algerian border?

The border lies roughly 40–50 km east of the dunes, but the crossing is closed and the Merzouga area itself is completely calm.

The frontier has been closed for decades and daily life in Merzouga is entirely oriented toward tourism and farming. Visitors notice nothing of the border except that the dunes simply continue east beyond reach.
