What makes a tent a resort?
The difference between camping and a tent resort is not the fabric — it's the infrastructure hidden behind it. A true luxury tent resort provides, as a baseline:
- A real bedroom. King-sized bed, quality mattress and linens, rugs, lighting, furniture — a room that happens to have canvas walls.
- A private en-suite bathroom. Flushing toilet, hot shower, towels and toiletries. Shared facilities are the line in the sand — literally — between glamping and camping.
- Climate control. Heating or air conditioning tuned to the environment; in the desert, both matter in a single day.
- Food and service on site. Dinner and breakfast included or available steps from your bed, plus staff on hand around the clock.

In Kenya and Tanzania, tented safari lodges pioneered the form — butlers, claw-foot tubs and elephants at the waterhole. - Is the bathroom truly private, and is the water hot in the evening rush?
- How is the tent cooled in summer and warmed in winter?
- What exactly does the rate include — meals, activities, transfers?
- How far is the resort from the landscape it advertises? (At Erg Chebbi, the honest answer can be "zero metres.")
- Who runs it? Locally rooted teams tend to deliver the deeper experience.
The verdict
Luxury tent resorts are travel's best idea in a generation: all of the wild, none of the roughing-it.
