Erg Chigaga: the far dunes
Erg Chigaga is Morocco's largest erg — roughly 35 kilometres of dunes reaching around 60 metres, sitting some 60 kilometres beyond M'Hamid, the literal end of the paved road. That geography is its identity. You reach a Chigaga desert camp only by 4x4 (about two rough, beautiful hours from M'Hamid) or by multi-day camel trek. The reward is profound remoteness: fewer camps, fewer people, horizons empty in every direction. The cost is logistical: M'Hamid itself is already a long day's drive from Marrakech (roughly 8–9 hours via Agdz and Zagora), and the camp transfer adds more. Luxury exists at Chigaga, but infrastructure is harder won — water, power and supplies all cross the same 60 km of piste you did.
Erg Chebbi: the accessible sand sea
Erg Chebbi, by contrast, rises right at the edge of Merzouga village: a 28-kilometre sea of apricot-coloured dunes whose crests reach roughly 150 metres — visibly taller and steeper than Chigaga's. Paved roads run to the sand itself. You can park at a camp like ours (free, private), walk to your tent, and be climbing your first dune minutes after check-in. The region has real amenities — the Errachidia airport a few hours away, cafés and clinics in town — while the erg is vast enough that a well-placed camp still gives you dune-framed solitude at sunset. Accessibility also makes comfort easier to deliver: hot water and air conditioning are standard at the best Merzouga camps, including every tent at Sundrift.

- Dunes: Chebbi's are taller and more dramatic; Chigaga's field is larger and emptier. Photographers argue about this forever; sunset settles it for no one.
- Access: Chebbi by ordinary car to the camp door; Chigaga by 4x4 past the end of the tarmac. With children or limited days, this is decisive.
- Time budget: a Chebbi stay slots into a classic Marrakech–Fes circuit (the Merzouga road passes the Dadès and Todra gorges). Chigaga is a destination in itself, usually costing two extra travel days.
- Solitude: Chigaga wins outright — that's its product. Chebbi offers quiet corners rather than emptiness.
- Comfort: Chebbi's camps can run deeper luxury for less money; at Chigaga the same standard costs substantially more.
- Price: transfers dominate Chigaga budgets. At Merzouga, a luxury Double Tent is €60 a night, dinner and breakfast included.
So who should choose Chigaga?
Genuinely: travellers with time, a taste for expedition logistics, and a specific hunger for emptiness — desert connoisseurs on a second or third Moroccan trip, or anyone building their itinerary around the deep south. If that's you, go, and savour the drive past Lake Iriqui.
And who should choose Merzouga?
