The sand sea

Erg Chebbi is Morocco’s most celebrated erg — a sea of drifting sand rising from the flat hammada like a mirage. Its tallest dunes reach roughly 150 metres, high enough that climbing one for sunrise is a genuine (and genuinely rewarding) morning workout. Through the day the sand shifts colour: pale gold at noon, deep amber in the late afternoon, glowing orange-rose in the last hour of light.
The village of Merzouga sits right at the erg’s western edge. That is what makes this corner of the Sahara so special: no long camel trek is required to reach real dunes. From Sundrift Luxury Camp, the sand starts at your tent flap.

Planning your desert days
Getting to Merzouga
Merzouga lies in south-eastern Morocco, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Most guests arrive by road: roughly 9 hours from Marrakech (usually with a spectacular overnight stop in the Dadès or Todra gorges), about 7 from Fes, or a short hop from Errachidia’s regional airport. The drive itself is part of the experience — kasbahs, palm oases and the High Atlas passes roll past the window. We include free private parking at the camp if you are self-driving.
When to come
October to April is the sweet season: warm days, crisp starry nights, and perfect walking sand. March and October are ideal for combining the dunes with the rest of Morocco. Summer afternoons are hot, but desert mornings and evenings stay beautiful — and every tent at our camp has air conditioning for the midday hours.
Sunrise, sunset and the night sky
The two golden hours are the desert’s daily theatre. Most guests ride camels out for sunset, then wake early to watch the sun lift over the dune crests — the erg turns from grey-blue to flame in minutes. After dark, Merzouga has some of the clearest skies in North Africa: with no city light for many kilometres, the Milky Way is routinely visible from the camp.
Beyond the dunes
A 4x4 excursion around Merzouga adds context to the beauty: nomad families who still move with the seasons, the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia village, seasonal Lake Dayet Srji and its flamingos, and the black volcanic desert beyond the erg.
